Sabah is internationally recognized as part of Malaysia, and reopening the dispute could strain ties with a key neighbor. At a time when Southeast Asian cooperation is vital for trade and security, escalating tensions is a risky move.

The Philippines stands to gain more from strong diplomatic relations with Malaysia than from pursuing a claim with uncertain outcomes. Cooperation on labor, border security, and regional safety would be put at risk.

Weak Legal Ground and Self Determination

The legal basis of the Philippine claim remains fragile. While historical ties to the Sultanate of Sulu are often cited, modern international law prioritizes effective governance and recognition. Sabah has been under Malaysian administration since 1963.

Equally important is the principle of self determination. The people of Sabah identify as part of Malaysia, and this reality cannot be ignored without diplomatic consequences.

Energy Crisis Needs Real Solutions

Connecting the Sabah claim to the current energy crisis is impractical. Any potential access to oil resources would take years of negotiation and development. It does not address immediate fuel concerns.

Focus on Practical Diplomacy

Reviving the Sabah claim distracts from urgent priorities. A cooperative approach with Malaysia better supports economic stability and national interests. The failed legal and enforcement efforts of the supposed heirs of the Sultanate of Sulu in recent years further highlight how weak and difficult to sustain such claims have become on the global stage.

True leadership lies in pursuing policies that deliver results, not in reopening disputes with high costs and low returns.
