The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake occurred at 7:37 am. and was caused by movement along the Cotabato Trench. The quake was initially recorded at magnitude 7.0 before being upgraded to 7.8. Its epicenter was located offshore near Sarangani at a depth of about 33 kilometers.

Authorities immediately issued tsunami warnings for coastal communities in the Philippines, while neighboring Indonesia and Malaysia also alerted residents in vulnerable coastal areas.

Casualties, Damage, and Emergency Response

Officials reported at least 4 deaths and more than 200 injuries following the earthquake. Many of the casualties and injuries were recorded in General Santos City, one of Mindanao’s most important economic centers.

Buildings sustained structural damage, roads and bridges developed cracks, and utility services were disrupted. General Santos International Airport temporarily suspended operations, leading to flight cancellations. Schools across affected areas also halted classes.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered all relevant government agencies to respond immediately. The Office of Civil Defense and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council began coordinating relief and rescue efforts, while the Department of Social Welfare and Development prepared evacuation centers and relief supplies.

Tsunami Threat Reaches Neighboring Countries

Tsunami waves of about 1 meter were recorded in parts of Sarangani and Sultan Kudarat. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned that waves of up to 3 meters could affect some Philippine coastlines, while smaller waves were possible in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed solidarity with the Philippines and said Kuala Lumpur stood ready to provide assistance if needed. Tremors were also felt in parts of Sabah, highlighting how seismic events in Mindanao can affect communities across maritime Southeast Asia.

As authorities continue damage assessments and monitor aftershocks, the earthquake serves as a reminder of the region’s shared exposure to natural hazards.
